Relliford "Red" Jackson

Obituary for Red Jackson

Referred to in newspapers as “Red” Jackson, he was most likely born in Shepherdstown, Virginia (now West Virginia). He served in the military during the Civil War, company and regiment unknown. At some point after his service, he married and lived with his wife and two stepsons in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He worked for a Dr. S. B. Keiffer as a groom and driver for most of his life.1 In July of 1881, he was tipped out of a carriage while attempting to drive a runaway horse, which left him with a bruised shoulder and a cut on his head.2 The Sentinel mentions him in 1883 when it reports that Dr. Keiffer got a new doctor’s carriage, and he is mentioned again in the same year when he got a new regulation city driver’s suit while under Dr. Keiffer’s employment.3

Jackson died in his home on West North Street, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, on December 27, 1892, at around 54 years old. He suffered from the grippe for a year leading up to his death. He is buried in Lincoln Cemetery, in Carlisle.4
