 John Arnold served in the 41st U.S. Colored Troops with Company D from September 19, 1864 to September 30, 1865. He was born in Charleston County, South Carolina on November 25, 1835.According to his 1910 Census, his parents were both born in South Carolina, but the census does not state their names.2 There is no census detailing his life and occupation before his enlistment, but his "U.S. Find A Grave Index" claims he was working as a "waiter" in Dauphin County.3 During this time, he stood five-foot, eight-inches, and held black characteristics.4 On September 19, 1864, he enlisted in Harrisburg and joined for service in Camp William Penn, Philadelphia.5 The individual who enlisted him was Captain John Kay Clement.6 John was able to legibly sign his name and served as a private from his enlistment to his discharge period.7 He served for one year, and discharged in Edinburg, Texas8. His military service records claim that he received a $100 bounty for enlisting into service.9 There are no medical records or hospital records, so it is uncertain whether he survived without being wounded. 

According to the "1910 United States Federal Census for John Arnold" that may be for John Arnold, he married Clara Arnold and conceived six children, but only the following four were living: Addie; Minnie; and Frank.10 During this time, John Arnold was a farmer; he and his family were living in Wise, Edgefield, South Carolina, titled Edgefield County, South Carolina Image 4 [Online].11 Addie was 25 years old and a farm laborer. Minnie was 21 years old and was also a farm laborer.12 Lastly, Frank was 23 years old and was a farm laborer.13 Both Minnie and Frank could read, but only Frank could read and write.14 There is no death certificates for the children or the parents. John Arnold passed away on February 22, 1924 at 88 years old, in Pennsylvania.15 He is buried in Saint Patrick Shrine Church Cemetery, Carlisle.16 His headstone is Marble, and the range grave number is 56.17
