[Massachusetts] Fisher, George - Age 25, Year: 1863 - 54th Massachusetts Infantry, Disbrow - Franklin

George Fisher served in the 54th Regiment of Massachussetts Infantry with Company D. According to his record, "[Massachusetts] Fisher, George - Age 25, Year:1863 - 54th Massachusetts Infantry, Disbrow-Franklin", in the National Archives Catalog, Fisher was born around 1838 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania to a Mrs. Elizabeth Lephart and a Mr. Jacob Fisher.1 Before he served in the U.S. Colored Troops, he held the occupation of a farmer. On March 25, 1863, at 25 years old, George enlisted into the 54th Regiment.2 He had a fair complexion with blue eyes and black hair.3 During his military service in the 54th Massachussetts Regiment, he was wounded above his left elbow and arm at Fort Wagner, Morristown.His surgeon emphasized that his elbow and arm wound made him unfit for field service. Due to his wounds, he was discharged June 30, 1864 on a Surgeon's certificate of disability.After his military service, he wedded and divorced his wife of several years, Josephine Boon.6  After his years of military service, he succumbed to his death on March 24, 1886. According to his burial record in the Report for Veterans' Grave Registration Record, George Fisher was buried in Section A-2, Grave 15 and had a sandstone tombstone.7 He was also a part of the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) for his service.8 There is currently no picture of the tombstone or of George Fisher. 

According to the "1850 United States Federal Census for George Fisher", on the database, Ancestry.com, George Fisher -- 12 years old at the time -- attended school within the year, in Franklin, Pennsylvania.9 Several household members also attended school - Jacob Fisher (40 years old);Thomas Fisher (10 years old);and Daniel Fisher (8 years old).10 The school where George Fisher and his household members attended is so far unknown.
