Alexander Ormstead served in the 127th U.S.C.T., with companies C and D. He was born around 1851 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, to unknown parents.1 He enlisted and was mustered into Company C of the 127th U.S.C.T. as a private on August 29, 1864, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and was transferred to Company D at some point during his time in service. He was 5 feet and 4 inches tall, with dark hair, eyes, and complexion. According to his muster roll he was eighteen years old at the time, but given his approximate birth date, there is a chance that is not his actual age.2 While information from his time in the military is scarce, it is possible he was discharged with the rest of his company on October 20, 1865, in Brazos Santiago, Texas, due to the end of the Civil War.3 After his service, he lived in Cumberland County with the family of William Allen, and later with the family of Johnson Allen.4 On August 11, 1883, he filed a pension application as an army invalid, although the nature or cause of his injury is unknown.5 Ormstead died on September 12, 1926, in the Cumberland County Home in Middlesex, Pennsylvania around the age of 75, due to general hemorrhaging. He is buried in Union Cemetery, Carlisle, Pennsylvania.6
