Pennsylvania Civil War Muster Roll 1860-1869 for John Peck

John George Peck served in the 25th United States Colored Troops with Company I. He was born around 1836 in Rockingham County, Virginia.1  Before he enlisted into the 25th U.S. Colored Troops, he did labor work in Frederick County, Virginia.2 He had the following physical characteristics: black hair, black eyes, a dark colored complexion, and height of about five foot, ten.3 Before his enlistment, he was believed to be a free man. At 30 years old, on February 3, 1864, he enlisted in the 25th U.S. Colored Troops.4 His "Pennsylvania Muster Roll from 1860-1869 for John Peck" listed that Peck did his service on the tenth day of 1864 for three terms.5 This muster roll stated that the service lasted until December 5, 1865.6 This document also stated that Colonel Jasper H. Warren led and organized Company I.7 Peck held the title of private and was stationed in Company I. During his military service, he suffered scurvy, a deadly disease caused by vitamin C deficiency.8 In addition, he also developed an infection in his left shoulder that landed him in a hospital in Gunboat Paint, Florida .9 Despite his development of scurvy and a deadly infection, he survived and released himself from his company on December 6, 1865 in Philadelphia.10

When Peck was around 37 years old, he wedded Josephine, a native of Virginia.11 His wife gave birth to seven children -- William A.; Mary E.; John; George; Florence; Margaret; and Robert -- who were born in Virginia.12 At around 1864, he was living in Pennsylvania; it is unclear whether he was truly living in Carlisle, Pennsylvania during this period. According to The Sentinel, on September 25, 1895, Peck succumbed to his death from "asthma".13 He was about 58 to 64 years old. The newspaper states that he was living in his home (West Chapel Alley) and fighting a serious two-month illness.14 He left behind his wife, Josephine, and his seven children; he is buried in Carlisle's Lincoln Cemetery.15 His burial record in the "Report for Veterans' Registration Record" states that he was a private for 10 months and 3 days and was buried in Section A-1, Grave 1.16 He also had a sandstone tombstone.17
