Judge Dale F. Shughart was born on July 21, 1913 in South Middleton Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Boiling Springs High School before earning a degree from Dickinson College. He then taught for two years before enrolling at The Dickinson School of Law. After graduating in 1938, Shughart entered private practice while also working as an attorney for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. In 1942, Shughart enlisted in the Army and fought in Europe during World War II. He earned three Battle Stars and a Bronze Star by the end of the war in 1945.
Judge Shughart returned to private practice and in 1946, he was appointed district attorney, and a year later, he was elected President Judge of Cumberland County Common Pleas Court, where he would serve until he was 70 years old. Not ready to retire at 70, Shughart authored the textbooks “Pennsylvania Civil Practice” to keep sharp.
During his career, Shughart was heavily involved at Dickinson Law School, serving as adjunct professor from 1958-1993, president from 1962-1993, and the board of trustees member from 1948-1996. He passed away in 2000 at the age of 87.
