John Henry Barton was born in 1846 in Maryland to John and Ann Barton.[1] By the age of 12, he worked as a laborer for the Todd Family in Creagerstown, Frederick, Maryland.[2] Then under the Enrollment Act of 1863, he enlisted on November 1, 1864, as a substitute for Andrew Bostater.[3] [4] Barton served a one-year term being discharged as a private on November 15, 1865, at Indianola, TX. According to his military records, he was hospitalized, from July 6, 1865, to September 20, 1865. No information was written detailing his hospital stay. In June, he was docked $35.90 for clothing, which was by mistake. Once discharged, he was entitled to transportation to Maryland.[5] After the war, Barton lived in District 1, Washington, Maryland, and worked as a day laborer.[6] He filed for a pension on April 18, 1890, in Pennsylvania.[7] The rest of his life is undocumented until he died in 1890 when he was buried in Lincoln Cemetery. [8]. There is no record of his death other than the headstone at his grave.
