Samuel Kelley
Samuel Kelley served with Company G of the 44th U.S.C.T. He was born around 1844 in Cherokee, Alabama, and was working as a farmer before he joined the military. He enlisted as a private in Rome, Georgia, at twenty years old, on July 30, 1864, and he was mustered out on August 6, 1864. His descriptive book records him as five feet and eight inches tall, with a brown complexion, and black hair and eyes.1 He was stationed with his company on duty in Rome, Georgia, until he was captured on October 13, 1864, and held as a prisoner of war until July of 1865, when his muster rolls once again list him as present.2 He was mustered out with the rest of his company in Nashville, Tennessee, on April 30, 1866, due to the end of the war, and owed the military $9.19 for clothing.3
Very little information is available about his life after the Civil War. There is a Samuel Kelley mentioned in newspapers around Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, but there is no way to determine if it is the same man.4 The date of his death is unknown, but he is buried in Lincoln Cemetery, in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
