John Green
John Green served in the 54th United States Colored Regiment with Company H. The "1850 United States Federal Census for John Green" states that an individual named John Green was born around 1833 in Pennsylvania.1 However, it is uncertain whether this John Green also served in the United States Colored Troops. In his "1850 United States Federal Census for John Green", John Green (an individual named John Green) was 18 years old and lived in Carlisle, Pennsylvania with 40-year-old Charles Green and 20-year-old Emily Green.2 It is not stated in his census records whether Charles Green was John's father and whether Emily Green was his sister. There are no census records for 1860, but there are military service records and pension records for John Green. On April 15, 1863 John Green enlisted in the 54th United States Colored Regiment in Readville, Massachusetts.3 He was a 31-year-old laborer with brown eyes eyes and a "dark" complexion.4 He suffered a wound in battle of Boykins Mills on April 18, 1865.5 During battle, he was shot in his right arm, "fractioning [his] ulna" and was hospitalized at Charleston Hospital - shown on the right (not known whether the hospital was Roper's Hospital).6 On September 12, 1865, John filed for a "certificate of disability for discharge".7 He mustered out on August 20, 1865 in Charleston, South Carolina with his company; the "54th Massachusetts Regiment: C to H" on the National Gallery of Art states that he survived the war at Fort Wagner.8 On April 13, 1877, he filed for an "invalid" status, with the following certificate number: 536852.9 In 1880, John was living in the First Ward of Carlisle, Pennsylvania with his 26-year-old wife, Sarah; his eight-year-old son, George; and his one-year-old daughter, Rachael.10 According to The (Carlisle) Sentinel, on November 17, 1896, John and a man, named Adolphus Wilkinson (colored) were imprisoned for "being overloaded with cheap whiskey and disorderliness".11 On March 21, 1911, John (around 70 years old) passed away from an apoplexy at the county's almshouse in Middlesex Township.12 His death certificate states that he was married and a laborer.13 He was buried in the Union Cemetery in Section C, Grave 3; his gravestone was marble and it had a G.A.R. star on it.14 The image "Tombstone for John Green" shows an image from Find A Grave of John Green's grave.15 There are currently no digitized or print images of John Green or his family members.
