John Carter
John Carter served in the 127th regiment with Company I. He was born in about 1844 (unknown birthplace) to unknown parents.1 There are no census records, military records, pension records, or death certificate records for him. However, there is a death certificate record for his mother, Katherine Henson Carter, and a tombstone photograph for John Carter. John's burial record in the "Pennsylvania Veterans Burial Cards 1777-2012 for John Carter" states he served as a Private from September 8, 1863 to August 29, 1864.2 Since there are no military records or official images of John, we do not know his physical description or occupation before his enlistment. However, there is a city directory, titled "U.S. City Directories 1822 to 1995 for John Carter", that states the location of an individual, named John Carter; this individual called John Carter was a laborer and lived on "h 121 N West" Carlisle, Pennsylvania.3 According to the journal article, Corporal Jesse G. Thompson G.A.R. Post 440, in the Cumberland County History (Journal) Collection, John Carter was the last veteran of Post 440.4 The "Membership Roster of Corporal Jesse G. Thompson" in this document listed John Carter as a "Post Commander".5 His mother, Katherine Carter, passed away on Monday, October 6, 1924 (about 76 years old) on 118 West Chapel Alley, Carlisle.6 Her death certificate states that Katherine died from "pneumonia".7 At this time, her husband and two sons (Robert and Benjamin) were still living.8 John Carter passed away on a Saturday in 1924 (about 80 years old) on 118 West Chapel Alley from "heart trouble".9 His obituary in The Sentinel states that he was part of the Shiloh Baptist church in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.10 It is not confirmed whether he was of the Baptist religion. Only his son, "Benjamin Carter," was living; thus, it is possible, but not confirmed, that his son passed away before his death.11 John Carter is buried in the Colored part of the Union Cemetery in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.12 The image on the right, "Tombstone for John Carter", shows an image from 2010 of his grave.13 His burial record does not state his section number, grave number, or headstone description.
