According to the "U.S. Find A Grave Index, 1600s to Current for Charles Slaughter", Charles Slaughter was born around 1841 in Fauquier County, Virginia.1 He was the son of Philip Slaughter and Mary Slaughter; his census records do not state where his parents were born.2 Before 1880, there are no census records stating his activities or residences. On May 20, 1864, Slaughter enlisted in Roxbury, Massachusetts to the 5th regiment of the United States Colored troops with Company D.3 During his enlistment, he was a 26-year-old farmer, and was five foot, eight. He mustered in on May 28 at Gallop's Island, Boston Harbor. As the article, "Gallops Island During Civil War" describes, Gallops Island was the main location for preparing Union troops for war and discharging or mustering out soldiers. The image titled, "Gallops Island as Seen From Boston Harbor", shows an actual image of the island. At the end of the war, on October 31, 1865, Slaughter mustered out in Clarksville, Texas. According to his military records in the "U.S. Colored Troops Military Service Records, 1863 to 1865 for Charles Slaughter" (NARA), Charles was required to pay $11.00 for a rifle and additional military equipment.7 There are no specific records before 1900 showing the Charles Slaughter born in 1908, but there is an 1890 record. In 1890, an individual named Charles Slaughter moved to Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and was working as a farmer.8  Not long after, on October 12, 1891, Charles filed an "invalid pension" - 1052408. 9 In 1900, a 58-year-old individual, named Charles Slaughter, was living on Mabe Street Avenue of Carlisle, Pennslyvania.10 This record also shows that he was married in 1884, but it does not state to whom. His 1900 census states that he was working as a "shoe" laborer.11 The household members living with him were his 15-year-old daughter, Louisa; his sister-in-law, Christanna; and a 46-year-old guest, named King Green.12 According to the image, General Affidavit, on "U.S. Find A Grave Index, 1600s for Charles Slaughter"  Charles was married to Mary Slaughter, and had one daughter, named Susan Brooks.13 About eight years later, on August 18, 1908, Charles passed away from pulmonary tuberculosis.14   At the time of his death, Charles was living in West Chapel Avenue.15 His obituary in The Sentinel states he was working for Mrs. Penrose as a caretaker for Ashland Cemetery.16 His wife and two children (Susan Brooks and Charles) survive. His burial record in the "Pennsylvania Veterans Burial Cards, 1777-2012 for Charles Slaughter", claims his "marble" gravestone is buried in the Carlisle Colored Graveyard of Union Cemetery in "Section C-1, Number 4".17
