Mansion House Hotel

A landmark in Carlisle, the “Mansion House Hotel” operated on the south west corner of West High and Pitt streets from the late 1830s until the 1920s. Inns on that site had housed travelers since the days of the Revolutionary War. The first tavern on the site was kept by James Pollock in the eighteenth century.

Charles Franklin Moss (b. 1878 Winchester, VA; d. 1961 Winchester VA), painter and professional photographer, was the first African American member of the National Association of Professional Photographers (1914), the winner of a competition to design a new Pennsylvania flag in 1907,and member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh.
