The old farm house and barn of my paternal grandfather, Charles Burnett “C. B.” Baker Sr. (1860-1933), stood just off the Walnut Bottom Rd, being situated on Strohm Road, Lees Crossroads, Shippensburg. In 2005, it was leveled, a farm equipment company buying all but a few of the original acres.
In 1904 Blanche’s parents, Annie Simons Spotts and George Billow Dum prepared for the family’s move from Landisburg to Carlisle. Annie was pleased to have acquired three quarts of onions.
J. Mark Frey (1880-1958) and his wife, Miriam Anna Dum (G: Thommen) (1891-1988), raised their family on South Hanover Street, Carlisle from the early 1930s forward. Mark, as he was called, was born to a confectioner living in Allentown, about seven miles west of Bethlehem.
In January 1974 Miriam Anna (Dum) Frey (1891-1988) wrote a letter describing a favorite family story. Written from her home at 629 So. Hanover Street, the letter was addressed to grandson Stephen D.
Cumberland County has a long, well known, and valued history as home, whether by birth, descent, or relocation, to inventors, researchers and academicians.
Eric Swidler is proud to oversee the group of radio stations that his father has maintained in Carlisle for over fifty years. Radio Carlisle under Swidler leadership will celebrate sixty plus years in 2025. In 1960, Eric’s father, Harold Z. Swidler, enjoyed listening to radio as much as anyone.

Capt. Alexander Peebles Sr., was a blacksmith and farmer whose homestead of 1774 sits on what is now known as Cramer Rd., Southampton Township (formally Hopewell Twp.), Shippensburg. He was my paternal 4th great-grandfather through my great-grandmother Abbie (Highlands) Baker, whose dad, Wm. Isaac was a son of James Highlands & Mary Elizabeth Peeples (1797-1871), a daughter of Capt. Alexander.
Silver spoons and tableware were considered valuable assets in 1780. Spoons and a few other pieces of tableware such as “Mustard Potts” represent entries among a handful of the county’s residents. They are not found in the earliest county tax lists.
