Joseph Rideout

Veterans Burial Card for Joseph Rideout (Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission)

Joseph Rideout was born in Southampton, Pa, to Lewis and Christiana Rideout.[1] At the age of 18, he enlisted in Chambersburg as a soldier. His prior occupation was farming. During his enlistment, Rideout was a part of the pioneer brigade from June 1864 until April 1865. He was officially mustered out in Brownsville, TX October 16, 1865. [2] After the war, Rideout settled in Shippensburg. He married Emma Rideout in 1877 when she was 23 years old. As of the 1900s census, the Rideout’s had six children. Joseph Rideout was a laborer and could read and write.[3][4] Rideout also had a pension. According to the Sentinel, his pension rose from $6 to $8 in November 1902.[5] In his later years, Rideout’s suffered much loss. Joseph and his wife lost their daughter Emma at the age of 28 in October 1918.[6] Then on April 3, 1919, Joseph lost his wife. At her death, two of Rideout’s sons were in France, most likely fight in WWI.[7] Rideout died at the age of 76 in his home on North Queen Street on May 4, 1921. His obituary stated he was a member of the A.M.E Zion Church on South Penn Street. He also had five children survive him.[8] Rideout was buried in the Locust Grove Cemetery Section A-2, Grave 17.[9]
