Henry Ward
Biography
Henry Ward was born in Clarke County Virginia on October 11, 1842. Not much is known about his early life, but his obituary states that he was enslaved.[1] On January 20th, 1864, Ward enlisted into Company E of the 25th regiment of the USCT in Carlisle, PA.[2] At the time he was 5’6”, and 20 years old. The regiment was initially boarded onto a ship headed for New Orleans, but the ship started to sink during a storm, and they landed in North Carolina. Once back on land, they joined in the defense of Little Washington and eventually made it to New Orleans. They later went on to participate in the Mobile Campaign.[3] On December 6, 1865, Henry Ward was mustered out with the rest of his regiment. After the war, Ward moved to South Middleton in Cumberland County. By 1880, he had Married a woman named Flora, and together they had six children. Henry was a laborer at the time.[4] In 1895 his son Walter married a woman named Georgia Jordan. Henry and his wife Flora are listed on their marriage certificate.[5] The family had moved from South Middleton to Mt. Holly Springs. Henry Ward became involved in the local Mt. Holly AME Church, eventually becoming a trustee. In 1910, Henry had become a widower, and was working odd jobs as a laborer.[6] Five years later, on March 18, 1915, Henry Ward died after a brief illness at the age of 72.[7] He was buried in Mount Holly Colored Cemetery.
